Clients show up with all kinds of complaints from foot to head. And the standard of practice is to mostly remedy these through local stretching and strengthening exercises. If you are a manual therapist, it is likely you still work at a more local level to solve the “problem.”

If you are the exception to the above, FANTASTIC. And still, I think I have some pretty cool tricks up my sleeve to share with you.

Each human being is a whole that operates as a complex system. And we need to attend to the whole as well as the parts and their intricate interaction.

While local treatment can often get our clients out of pain and get them on their “feet” pretty quickly, it rarely addresses the underlying patterns of daily use, keeping the client in a repeating pattern of injury and misuse over time.

The single most important thing we can include for clients (besides decreasing pain) is an upgrade in their walking.

Why? Gait is the most effective and efficient way of feeding our entire system. When we walk more, we feed every system of the body. When we walk better, we feed ourselves good food.

Here is the rub. A lot of us don’t know what to look for in gait. We often look at the pelvis down. An assessment should include at least these elements:

What else?

An assessment should also include the client becoming aware of what they do.

This doesn’t mean telling them what they do. It means EMPOWERING them to DISCOVER what they do without judgment or shame. This is the set-up for making positive forward motion within the assessment itself.

We will start with Ruthy Alon’s Bones for Life® process called Bicycle. You receive this lesson to do on your own time prior to our live session. This was my inspiration for the assessment.

Within the class, I will demonstrate how I brought this process off the floor to upright and developed a checklist that you can also use to quickly get a handle on your client’s pattern and entry points for improvement.

This material can be used with the independently mobile as well as those using a walking cane or trekking poles. I have used it successfully for those using a walker or needing parallel bars.
